Unforgettable Gift Ideas for Surfers
There are great gifts for surfers available even on a small budget. Maybe you can team up with others to give something bigger? No matter what you’re working with, you’re sure to find the perfect gift here:
Under $25
1. Surf Wax
Every surfer needs surf wax to keep their board grippy. It’s a consumable item, so it’s always an appreciated gift idea for surfers. Wax comes in different hardness levels depending on water temperature (the warmer the water the harder the Wax). Check where your surf buddy usually surfs and pick the right one.
2. Surfboard Repair Kit
Unfortunately, surfboards are prone to small damages known as “dings.” While major damage requires professional repair, minor dings can be easily fixed with the right repair kit. This makes it a highly practical and thoughtful gift idea for any surfer. If you’re unsure about the board material, opt for an epoxy repair kit—it works for both PU (polyurethane) and epoxy boards.
Another great idea is to give a complete set of everything, for example:
3. Wetsuit Care
Gifts for surfers can also be practical—like a specialized care product for wetsuits! Anyone who regularly wears a wetsuit knows how important it is to clean it thoroughly. Proper care not only removes unpleasant odors (yes, even from the occasional peeing incident) but also significantly extends the suit’s lifespan. If your surf buddy rides the waves in a region where a wetsuit is essential, this surfer gift is sure to hit the mark!
4. Wetsuit Repair Kit
A small tear in a wetsuit can quickly become uncomfortable in cold water. Since professional repairs or buying a new wetsuit can be expensive, many surfers try to put off fixing minor issues for as long as possible. However, with a Repair Kit, small damages can be easily and effectively repaired. I tried it myself in Australia and was impressed by how well the adhesive holds. The key is to take your time and do it carefully to avoid creating any hard edges—then your wetsuit will feel almost like new!
5. Surfer Book
If you’re looking for a special gift for a surfer, books with a surfing theme are an excellent choice! From gripping novels to inspiring biographies, the options are endless. For surfers who love to read, a book is the perfect gift to enjoy their passion even off the waves.
My personal favorite: Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life.
Another good read and highly useful book is the Surf Survival: The Surfer’s Health Handbook.
6. Resistance Bands
Surfers need a strong core and enduring shoulders for hours of paddling. Resistance bands, available in different levels of resistance, are perfect for targeted exercises. They’re compact enough to fit into any bag, making them ideal for travel. Personally, I can’t imagine my routine without them, especially for my morning warm-up. Since I started using them, I’ve had far fewer shoulder issues. As their benefits aren’t widely known yet, this gift is sure to be a game-changer for any surfer!
7. Surfer Beanie
Gifts for surfers should be both practical and stylish—and that’s exactly what beanies are! Every surfer owns at least one cool beanie because, even in warm regions, mornings or evenings can get chilly, and post-surf winds can give you goosebumps. Do you know the recipient’s favorite brand or color? Perfect—this makes choosing even easier. A stylish beanie from popular surf or skate brands like Quiksilver, Billabong or Carhartt is a timeless gift idea that’s always a hit. You can find plenty of Surf Brands in Surf Shops like Blue-Tomato.com.
8. Sun Protection
Who doesn’t love the sun? But by now, it’s no secret how harmful UV radiation can be—even on cloudy days! Surfers, in particular, are at higher risk due to the sun’s reflection on the water. So, giving your surf buddy proper sun protection is a thoughtful and practical gift. When choosing one, make sure it has a high SPF of at least 30, is water-resistant, and environmentally friendly. Opt for mineral filters (like zinc) instead of chemical ones, as the latter can harm marine life.
Many surfers swear by zinc paste—you might have noticed the iconic surf war paint on their faces. But be careful: not everyone’s skin reacts well to it. If your friend, like me, is prone to breakouts, a mineral sunscreen without zinc might be the better option.
I also think this Travel Set is a very cute idea:
9. Fin Remover
Attaching and removing surfboard fins repeatedly can be a hassle, especially when they get stuck. A fin remover or fin puller makes the process much easier and helps prevent damage to the material. I absolutely love this handy gadget, but I’ve noticed it’s not something many surfers own—making it a gift with a great element of surprise!
Under $50
10. Fascia tools
I’ve been a huge fan of fascia tools for years—they’re the perfect addition to both surf warm-up and recovery routines. Besides the classic roller, I especially love using a fascia ball to target smaller tension points, and it’s super convenient for traveling. My go-to brand is Blackroll. Their sets include all the essential tools (I recently sent the pink version to a friend, and she absolutely loved it!).
11. Wetsuit Hanger
We’re back to Wetsuits, but what can I say—they’re an essential item for surfers! A special wetsuit hanger is incredibly practical, especially when traveling or living the Van Life, as there often isn’t a good place to dry it properly. Make sure the hanger is easy to store and sturdy enough to hold the wetsuit.
12. Surfwear
Every surfer loves having a selection of cool board shorts, rash guards, or stylish swimsuits—believe me, no one can have too many. If you’re unsure about your surf buddy’s size or taste, it can be a bit trickier. So, be sure to keep the receipt for an exchange, just in case. You can’t go wrong with well-known surf brands, like Billabong, Quicksilver, Ripcurl and others. You can also browse in A Surf Shop like Blue Tomato.
13. Key Safe
A key box is essential for any surfer to securely store car or house keys. Knowing that everything is safe allows the surfer to focus on the actual session. It’s definitely a must-have for every surfer. There are many brands to choose from, but personally, I’ve had great experience with the ABUS key box:
14. Surfboard Rack
Every surfer loves their boards and can’t get enough of looking at them. That’s why surfboards make great home décor for surf enthusiasts. How about a stylish surfboard wall mount for their favorite board? It works universally for both indoor and outdoor spaces.
15. Leash
Every surfer needs a leash for their surfboard. It connects the board to your foot and is absolutely essential. Leashes wear out and can break, so it’s always good to have a spare. To choose the right leash, you’ll need to know the size of the surfboard. A general rule when selecting your leash is that it should be the same length (or a bit longer if the board is an intermediate size) as the board you’ll be using it with. For example, if the surfboard is 6’0, you’ll need a 6’0 leash. If it’s a 6’6 board, you’ll need a 7’0 leash
When buying a leash, make sure to choose one of good quality. Reliable brands include Ocean and Earth, FCS Creature of Leisure. You find many brands in Surf Shops like Blue Tomato as well.
16. Surf Coach / Coffee-Table Book
I love Coffee Table Books in any shape and form! There are now plenty of digital and printed surf coaches available that not only inspire but also offer valuable tips about surfing and surf travel. Personally, I’ve gifted a few of them because I think it’s something people rarely treat themselves to. My absolute favorite is the “Wave Culture” surf coach. It sits on my desk like my personal Bible. I love flipping through it over and over, as it covers so many fascinating topics related to surfing. Plus, it makes a stylish decoration in any surfer’s home.
Since the book is only available in German, here’s another recommendation for a really nice English coffee table book that I saw at a friend’s place with a foreword by world surfing champion Kelly Slater
Another excellent choice, especially if you’re gifting a surfer girl, is this beautiful collection:
17. Surfboard Sock
Gifts for surfers that are both practical and thoughtful are always a hit—like board socks! They provide light protection for sensitive surfboards, guarding against UV rays, minor bumps, and scratches. Perfect for daily transport in the car or for storing the board at home. When buying, you just need to know the size of the board—and when in doubt, it’s better to go one size up!
Want to make the gift more personal? How about a customized sock or a voucher for one? Check it out here.

18. Surf Poncho
Surf ponchos are essential companions for every water sports enthusiast, making them a fantastic gift for a surfer. They serve as a portable changing room, allowing you to comfortably change out of your wetsuit or swimwear. Side openings make it easier to change, while they also help dry you off, keep you warm after your session, and protect your head and ears from the wind with the hood.
There are many stylish options available, which can make choosing a bit tricky. You can find a poncho for less money, but it’s worth investing in a quality product so the surfer can enjoy it for a long time. Personally, I prefer cotton ponchos over microfiber ones, as they’re warmer and cozier.
Big Surfer Brands, like Billabong, Quicksilver, Ripcurl have always nice Ponchos! Or just have a look in Surf Shops like Blue Tomato.
19. Ear Plugs
Have you heard of Surfer’s Ear? This ear condition is caused by cold water and wind, leading to bone growths that can block the ear canal. Ear plugs protect against these elements and are especially essential for surfers with sensitive ears. Luckily, I haven’t had any issues, but I know many surfers who swear by ear plugs. You can find ear plugs starting at $30 on Amazon & Co. However, several surfers have recommended these:
20. Photo / Video Session
How often do you get the chance to have your surf sessions professionally captured? Besides being a great memory, it’s also an excellent way to improve your technique. Photos and videos help identify mistakes and work on them—surfers swear by this type of correction. Do you know where your buddy’s next surf trip is going? Then look up local surf photographers, many of whom showcase their work on Instagram. Feel free to reach out if you need help with your search!
21. Balance Board
With a balance board, surfers can train their balance, agility, and strength—making it an ideal preparation for the next surf trip or a great way to train in between sessions, which makes it a perfect gift for surfers. There are many brands offering balance boards, and they even come in stylish designs, such as those from Daffy Boards.
From $100
22. Surfboard Bag
Every surfer needs a surfboard bag for traveling. The size depends on the board length and the number of boards that need to be transported. For longer trips, I use a board bag with wheels that fits three boards. For shorter outings, a smaller bag for one or two boards is enough.
A board bag is a great gift for a surfer if your surf buddy doesn’t have one yet, needs a different size, or needs to replace their old one. Look for high-quality brands, as board bags need to endure a lot to protect the surfboards properly. I personally like the bags from Channel Islands or FCS. Surf shops like Blue Tomato offer a wide selection of board bags, and you can always get advice on what would be best for your surf buddy.
23. Surf Skate
A surfskate is a special type of skateboard designed to mimic the movements of surfing on the street. It’s not your typical skateboard. A surfskate is perfect for surfers who don’t live by the sea. It allows your buddy to stay in training and practice surfing movements. Brands like YOW, Carver or Smoothstar are highly recommended. Visit a skate shop for advice on which model would be the best fit.
24. Surf Watch
Surf watches come in a range of price categories—from simple models with basic functions (time, alarm) to high-end devices offering information on waves, tides, and wind. For me, it’s especially important to keep track of time.
Consider whether your buddy already uses a sports watch or if they should start with a simpler model as a beginner. Both surf brands like Rip Curl , and specialized sports watch manufacturers like GARMIN offer a variety of models, such as this one:
25. Surfboard
Last but not least: The ultimate gift ideas for surfers? A surfboard, of course! But unfortunately, it’s also one of the most complicated gifts, requiring some expert knowledge as it depends on surf level, wave conditions, fitness, size, weight, and more.
Not sure what to choose? For beginners looking to get their own board, a gift voucher is the best option—this way, you can get advice together in the shop. A second-hand board can also be a smart choice.
For experienced surfers, I also recommend gifting a voucher. The joy of selecting the perfect board themselves is huge—and no gift could be more perfect for a surfer
Summary
With these 25 gift ideas for surfers, you’re well-equipped to make a wave rider happy. The possibilities are vast and can be tailored to any budget. Keep in mind that many of the bigger gifts—like a surfboard or surfskate—are best chosen together with your surf buddy to ensure they fit perfectly and bring long-lasting joy. Vouchers are a great alternative here and show that you’ve thought ahead, without the risk of buying the wrong item.
And don’t forget: it’s often the small, thoughtful gifts that have the greatest impact—like an inspiring book, a photography session, or a warming surf poncho that’s indispensable on cold days.
Whether your gift is practical, emotional, or extraordinary, what really matters is that you’ve put thought into it. With these ideas, you’ll show that you truly understand your surf buddy and the surfer lifestyle.
